After that terrible night, I committed to mailing the photos back to Mrs. Stauffer. But for maybe four or five days, I forgot to send the photos back and I couldn't stop thinking about Dusty. Finally, one evening I decided to try one last time. Suddenly, I got a new idea! I thought I'd ask him what he heard when the telephone rang. He said, "Hi. I'm sleepy, but many times a day I hear the name 'Meyer' when the telephone bells ring."

I called Mrs. Stauffer as fast as I could to tell her that she must call all the "Meyers" on the street where she lives and the next five streets over. A few days later, she called me, really heartbroken. She said, "I've called more than twenty Meyers in the last two days but I haven't found the right Meyers."

She wanted to give up again, but I pleaded with her to call all the local vets one last time. I felt that Dusty was near, and I simply couldn't give up on him. The next morning, she called me and began to cry.

"I found Dusty!" she cried. "He's in a nearby vet's office, and he has a broken leg. I told the vet about the last few horrible weeks and a little bit about you - but not too much, because the vets don't believe in you or your work. No one would believe my story, but then a medical secretary came into the room and overheard me talking. She said really loudly: `My name is Meyer!"' Mrs. Stauffer said the veterinarian was about to give Dusty to an animal shelter. If she had waited even one more day, it could have been too late.

After the happy ending, I did one last reading with Dusty to say thanks for the help and to ask him why he didn't tell me more about the situation so that I could find him faster. He said, "At first I was drugged for the operation on my leg, so I was very tired. And secondly, you didn't ask me the right questions. In the future, when you speak to a cat, you must keep your questions short. Humans talk and talk and talk, and at the end of your talking you have said nothing really important. Next time, when you talk with animals you must have a short chat and you'll know all you need to know. I wish you much fortune in the future to help many animals on the earth." Wow! This cat was no more than six months old! And with such sagacity! I was very impressed!
